Our DNA.

Our DNA statements are the most concise way to express what we are all about. They are at the absolute core of who we are.

WE ABIDE IN JESUS

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. — JOHN 15:4-5

Setting one of our DNA statements above the others is tough, but if we had to do it we would make it this one. The importance of abiding in Jesus cannot be overemphasized—everything else seems to flow from this. In teaching us to abide Jesus gives us a beautiful analogy that well describes the reality. We are grafted in to Him when we become believers, we are adopted, we draw our life from Him and because of that relationship fruit results.

WE GO TOGETHER

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. — ACTS 2:42-47

Acts two is one of those passages that resonates deeply within us because we naturally and deeply desire that kind of community. Three aspects of that community rise to the surface: they lived life together, they experienced awe at what God was doing, and they enjoyed a powerful kind of generosity. The scripture is packed with instruction about living life together and we strive for that kind of relationship at Oh Be Joyful Church.

Love one another, Serve one another, accept, help, encourage, care for, submit to, commit to, build trust with, be devoted to, be patient with, be interested in, be accountable to, confess to, live in harmony with, do not pass judgement on, do not slander, instruct, greet, admonish, spur one another on to love and good deeds, meet with, be concerned for, be humble in love, be compassionate.

WE PASS THE BATON

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. — MATTHEW 28:18-20

Passing the Baton is a great way to describe the part of our DNA that is about Discipleship—we are engaged in the constant motion of being sent out, lovingly and authentically handing off the truth of gospel to others, and empowering growth.

We are committed to nurturing people at all levels of spiritual maturity. We make a significant investment in Children and Youth as well as developing leaders through our 18 month internship program. Not to mention our work with women, men, and young adults.

Our success in Passing the Baton is not measured by how great the pastor is or any other leader—but on how well leadership is being handed off to the members of the body who are employing the gifts they have been given to BE the church.

WE ARE HEAT & LIGHT

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. — MATTHEW 5:14-16

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." — JOHN 8:12

I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. — JOHN 12:46
