Who We Are
From the first time I heard it the name Oh Be Joyful Church has always intrigued me and it still does. Whenever I explain to people in a secular setting that I work for “Oh Be Joyful Church” I like to watch their reaction as they parse exactly what an “Oh Be Joyful Church” is. They are thinking, “Are these people really-really happy?” or are we actually a pretty banal and morose lot so we put JOY in the name to lift ourselves up? Like naming a grumpy looking bulldog ‘Happy’. Those of us who know Oh Be Joyful Church can confirm that we didn’t have to plant meaning in our name—Joyful is who we are.
Just about a mile from the doors of the church is the creek we are named for. The Oh Be Joyful Creek drainage is a strikingly beautiful and unique part of the geography here and people who are familiar with Crested Butte know its reputation. The connection to the creek and its positive vibe in our town gives a head start to a local or a dedicated tourist in understanding who we are, but the meaning of the name goes much deeper. We are a church family who is committed to Reconciliation and Recovery and Retreat so it is meaningful that we are linked by name to a to be a place that refreshes, a place where people find peace and restoration, a place of excitement and beauty.
If you have been to worship with us in the past several years, you may have heard the band lead us in singing the words of a song drawn from Psalm 126. Stephanie usually leads vocally and there is ALWAYS a change in the atmosphere of the room when she begins to sing. The words are about joy that is provided by God despite any circumstances we might face; though we may have tears we are restored to joy, overflowing like streams after a storm in the desert.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad.
4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb!
5 Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!
6 He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
May the name Oh Be Joyful be an accurate description of this church body. May the mouths of the people here truly be filled with laughter, may we proclaim the good things that God has done, and if we go out with tears may we return glad because of the faithfulness of our Father.
